Getting to Campus

The University of Chicago is located in the neighborhood of Hyde Park, about eight miles south of downtown Chicago. Hyde Park is easily accessible by all forms of public transportation. Registration for Family Weekend is in the Library/Lounge of Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 East 59th Street, between Kimbark and Woodlawn Avenues.


BY CAR:

From Downtown Chicago
Take Lake Shore Drive south to the 57th Street exit (the Museum of Science and Industry). Follow the road (Cornell Drive) as it curves around the museum and take the fourth right onto the Midway Plaisance (the second right after the curve). Continue west along the Midway to campus.

From O'Hare Airport or the Northern Suburbs
Take I-90/94 East to I-55 North to Lake Shore Drive South (Highway 41). Then follow the directions above.

From Midway Airport (See University Maps and Directions)
Follow Cicero Boulevard north to I-55. Go north on I-55 until it terminates at Lake Shore Drive. Take Lake Shore Drive south, following the directions above.

From the Western Suburbs (See University Maps and Directions)
Take the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) to I-90/94 East. Exit on the I-55 North exit. Take I-55 to Lake Shore Drive South and follow the directions above.

From the Southwestern Suburbs
Take the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) to Lake Shore Drive South and follow the directions above.

From Indiana
Take I-65 or I-80 West to the Skyway (I-90/94 West). Drive westbound on the Skyway, exiting at Stony Island. Drive north on Stony Island and turn left at 60th Street.


BY TAXI / SHUTTLE:

Yellow Cab is one of the many car services in Chicago and can be reached at 312.TAXI.CAB (312.829.4222). If you are scheduling a pick-up, make sure to tell them your name and the time you need to be picked up. Always call to confirm thirty minutes before pick-up time. When leaving Hyde Park, please remember that it is located about eight miles south of the downtown area, it is often difficult to obtain a taxi immediately. Please call a taxi service fifteen to twenty minutes prior to your desired departure time to ensure a timely arrival at your destination.

From Midway
Midway airport is approximately thirty minutes to campus by taxi. The fare will range from $15.00 to $20.00.

From O'Hare
O'Hare airport is approximately one hour from campus. A taxi ride to Hyde Park will range from $40.00 to $50.00.

From Downtown Chicago
The fare for the fifteen to twenty minute taxi ride from downtown Chicago to Hyde Park ranges from $15.00 to $20.00.


BY TRAIN:

Catch the Metra Electric Commuter train at the Randolph, Van Buren or Roosevelt stations. Once in Hyde Park, exit at 59th Street and walk west along Midway Plaisance to campus. Call 312.836.7000 for public transportation schedule information, or check the Metra website: http://www.metrarail.com.


BY BUS:

The Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) #6 Jeffrey express bus will also take you from downtown Chicago to Hyde Park. Catch the bus southbound on State Street in the Loop. Get off at 57th Street or 59th Street, walk under the train tracks and continue west to campus.

The CTA #170 bus runs between campus and Midway Plaisance making stops on 59th Street at both Harper and Ellis.

The CTA #171 Hyde Park bus and the #172 Kenwood bus will take you around the Hyde Park neighborhood and surrounding communities.

The CTA #173 Lakeview Express will take you from various Hyde Park points to downtown, traveling on Michigan Avenue between Adams and Ohio, northbound and Delaware and Adams, southbound.

The #173 also continues north on Halsted from North Avenue stopping at, among other streets, Fullerton Parkway and Belmont Avenue in the Lakeview neighborhood before turning south again.


PARKING:

As the University of Chicago shares its neighborhood with the Hyde Park community, finding parking is often a challenge. Please allow extra time to secure a parking spot on weekdays.

Street parking is available on the Midway Plaisance, as well as on nearby streets around campus, though spaces are difficult to find after 8:30 am on weekdays.

The University parking structure is located on 55th Street with entrances on both Ellis and Greenwood.

The University of Chicago Hospitals operates a high-rise parking facility several blocks west of Ida Noyes Hall at 59th Street and Maryland Avenue. The day fare for that parking facility is $12.00.
